SEO, GEO and AEO
Search is no longer only a page of ten blue links. People now get answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and other assistants, and those answers quote and cite websites. Here I write about how search is evolving and what everyone with a website should know about it.
SEO (search engine optimization) is still the foundation: semantic SEO, technical SEO, local SEO and link building. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) build on it, with a focus on being understood, quoted and cited by AI systems. I also write about the tools behind this work, such as Google Search Console, GA4, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs, Semrush, Yoast SEO and Rank Math.
I have worked in SEO since 2023, starting as a WordPress developer setting up Yoast SEO and Rank Math on client sites and tracking search performance in Ahrefs and Search Console. Later I produced a 23-page semantic SEO master plan from Google Search Console, GA4, Bing Webmaster and Google Trends data, and led and co-developed the WordPress SEO Plugin Suite: 5 in-house plugins, about 11,700 lines of code, including a diagnostic scanner and a publish guard that requires an SEO title, meta description and schema.
This site is a live example of the ideas here, and I share how it is set up as I go.
